Service Description

Awaken all your senses with a tour to Mutawintji National Park. Mutawintji National park is located within the rugged Byngnano Ranges, with its beautiful gorges and creeks lined with majestic River Red Gums. Mutawintji means ‘place of green grass and waterholes’. The presence of shelter and water means this idyllic place is home to a wide variety of birds and wildlife. Among the gorges and cliffs are the secrets of an ancient culture. The Park reveals examples of rock carvings, paintings and stencils that provide evidence of aboriginal occupation of the area that dates back more than 8000 years. In September 1998 Mootwingee NP was formally handed back to it’s traditional owners. Today the area is called by its traditional name, Mutawintji. Start the day tour from the Visitor Information Centre in Broken Hill. The 130km drive from Broken Hill takes in ever changing landscapes that include the Barrier Ranges, saltbush and bluebush plains as far as the eye can see, mulga and red sand country. Morning tea along the way is enjoyed in the shade of a dry creek bed lined with majestic red gums. A little further on we enter Mutawintji National Park and proceed to the Historic Site. This area is where ceremonies and initiations took place. Listen to the story of Kullawarra, about the creation of Mutawintji in the dreamtime. Then we embark on interpretive bush walks to the Engravings Site and to the Stencils Site. The remnants of fireplaces and stone toolmaking give us an insight into traditional life in the area. After this tour concludes, we enjoy a picnic lunch freshly packed before we start our return back to Broken Hill. The bush walks are easy to moderate. Tour is confirmed once 4 passengers are reached to depart. Inclusions: Travel from Broken Hill return, morning tea, lunches, park entry, guided commentary along the journey, local indigenous tour guide in the restricted historical park, and an experience you'll never forget. The morning tea and lunch stop indicated may vary. Your tour guide is a native aboriginal guide, we work closely with the Mutawintji Land Council and Heritage Tour Guides where you will experience your very own indigenous guide trained & accredited by the Local Aboriginal Land Council. We pride our services on COVID safe practices, good quality services, up to date information, and an experience that you will take back home with you for years to come.
